What Self-Sabotage Is Really Telling You
Apr 05, 2025Over a lifetime of being human I’ve learned: the tender spot where self-sabotage bites is the exact place that needs to release, or shift.
Master teachers remind us that the limits we impose on ourselves are installed before we are 5 years old. So the limits we live within are intimate and personal. It’s not safe to ask for help, play small, don’t be vulnerable. It’s often a mixed tape of worst hits.
It interferes with happiness and joy and abundance, because it keeps us in the energy of separation.
Gay Hendricks calls it the Upper Limit Problem—the point where life starts getting so good, so aligned, so abundant… that our nervous system quietly panics and says, “Nope. Too much. Let’s mess this up before the other shoe drops.”
Cue the sabotage.
We flake.
We hide.
We overeat or overspend or pick a fight or bail on the very thing we said we wanted. We wreck romances, we procrastinate.
I think we also work on it, both consciously and unconsciously. Adding healthy practices, refining our circles of influence and support. I’ve talked to you about how my friendships have shifted, and the kind of support I have created and allow. I love being seen as human, as lovable and real, as visionary, as someone full of potential, and as someone who struggles to receive (hello, single mom hangover).
My self-sabotage points ask me to fully show up for myself. To make the choices that will expand, not contract me. “Geniuses, turn to the person next to you and explain this” says Dr. Joe Dispenza all the time in lectures. Because he knows–repetition and resonance are how we raise our frequencies and establish new neural pathways.
Evolution in work and life–into more money, better flow, more trust in our work, creativity and team–that takes practice.
It takes setting yourself up with support, relationships and frameworks that see you, hold you and lift you. And it takes doing the work to be present for those challenges.
It takes wanting MORE than the ordinary, and being willing to release not just DNA level stuff, but also habits and patterns. As we say in coaching, there is always another level. I used to say, new level, new devil and that’s true also… but the more we learn about using metaphysical principles and discipline to strengthen ourselves the less I think of new levels as devils. The more they feel like wide open spaces full of potential.
